Garage Door Maintenance
There are a lot of moving parts that keep a garage door operational. Firstly the hinges, there are hinges in the center of each door panel, make sure to properly apply lubricant to them. There are hinges for the rollers, and those should be lubricated as well as the wheels.
The lock on the door is usually overlooked. The lock itself is still a moving mechanism and should be properly lubricated. WD-40 should do the trick on all of these. Make sure to lubricate them properly and see if there is anything that can be causing the parts damage. The lock needs lubrication and some things as small as being in the sun can cause oxidation and rust to occur faster, especially over an eight-year period.
When you’re going through and you’re applying proper lubrication, you should be checking for damage or general wear and tear. You’re looking for discoloration or rust; there shouldn’t be the sounds of strain on the metal. A general rule of thumb is, if you can see or hear it, that’s not good. These parts are supposed to be quiet when you hear them it’s them calling for help.
For rollers or wheels, it’s possible to do the leg work and fix them yourselves. With hard work and the right parts, most people can fix the very basic things on a garage door. The process of identifying and finding the right tools is a different story. But there are some things you just shouldn’t touch.
When you are repairing a garage door, all of these moving parts can be dangerous to break. You never know just how much weight is resting on a certain part. If there is ever a moment where you are fixing the garage door and you are “winging it” it’s time to call in the professionals.
